Toys are available in a vast array of different designs and packaging.   Standing in a toy shop all the toys may look attractive but which toy to choose?   Different ride- on toys are available for different age groups and provide play value at various levels to children.

It is important to bear in mind that every child is different and will take her own time to learn and understand different activities. A child may not immediately get attracted to a ride- on toy but in a few weeks he will get to know how it works and the fun he can have playing with it.   

As the child gets used to the toy and his physical abilities increase he will stretch the toy usage to the maximum limit extracting all the play value.   Here stability of a ride- on toy is very important.   The more stable the toy is on the floor and the easier it is for the child to control means  the child will be able to successfully navigate it around the house.

The needs of a Toddler- a child who has just learnt to walk are different from older children.   Great care should be taken that we get the right ride-on toy for the toddler. 

• The ride-on should move multidirectional and not just go in a straight line.  How will a child turn a ride-on which only goes straight?   In such toys both front and back wheels are attached via axles.  This is very difficult for the child to change direction and can cause frustration and then disinterest in the toy. This type of ride-on will have limited play value. 
• Older children can operate and enjoy battery/electronic ride-ons but toddlers will need an adult to help them operate.  They also might feel a jerk when the toy starts.  Battery operated ride-on toys need a bigger area.  Younger children are happier when the ride-on moves according to their own physical capabilities. Oversized and unstable ride- ons are not only difficult to control but can sometimes become unstable.  Bigger is not always better.
• Music and lights are attractive but do they add to the mobility?  Mobility is the most important attribute of any ride-on toy.  In 4WD the focus is on mobility rather than other less important features.
• Attractive shapes may look cute but are they comfortable?  In some animal shaped ride- ons  ears are often made as holding devices. This design that might seem beautiful to look at but may be uncomfortable and awkward for the child to use.

With the back of the animal used as the seat often comfort and ergonomics can get compromised.  What may look beautiful is not always comfortable for the child.   

• Pedal cycles are good for older children but not for toddlers.  The thigh and calf muscles are not developed to exert the amount of pressure needed to move the pedal cycle.  They find it difficult to press pedals and move the tricycle indoors.

We may see the child struggling to move the ride-on toy indoors. 

Or perhaps just sitting on it and not making moves, waiting for an adult to push or play for him.

If the ride-on toy is too big for indoor use then this will cause frustration as the child will have to wait for an  adult to take him outdoors.
